(Berlin, 7.4.08) Today in Berlin, Kindernothilfe and several other German relief agencies have put forward a nine-point plan to ensure greater transparency, quality and control amongst organisations funded by donations. In addition to this measure, VENRO (the Association of German development non-governmental organisations) is assessing the possibility of a Code of Conduct to be drafted in association with the DZI, Germany’s Central Institute for Social Issues.

According to the UN Convention on the Rights of a Child it has been forbidden to use children as soldiers since 12th February 2002. Unfortunately, the number of child soldiers has hardly changed since then. There are still 250,000 children used in the wars of the adults. Children and teenagers have initiated the Red Hand Campaign and appeal to old and young to participate. Send your message on a sheet of paper including your name and your town to the UN politicians. As an expression of your protest, place your hand print with red finger paint on it!

(Duisburg/Addis Ababa, October 4th 2007) During their stay in Africa Chancellor Angela Merkel and Heide Wieczorek-Zeul, secretary for development, visited a project in Addis Ababa, which is supported by Kindernothilfe. The institution offers protection and support for girls who are forced to live in the streets. Many of them had to leave their families because of extreme poverty or cruelty.

(Duisburg/ Ica, 20. August 2007) Since Friday Kindernothilfe is supplying earthquake survivors in Peru with blankets, drinking water and food. Relief supplies are distributed in the area of Ica. 70 percent of the town and the villages nearby are destroyed. There is growing unrest in and around Pisco, with aid vehicles and shops being looted. People in and around Ica still need urgent help. Kindernothilfe released 60.000 Euro emergency aid.

(Duisburg/ Dhaka, 10.8.2007) Kindernothilfe increases emergency aid for the victims of the flood in South Asia to 100,00 euro. What is most important is primary medical aid for children and families in Bangladesh. The emergency aid reaches 40,000 persons, among them 24,000 children in four regions of the country and in Dhaka. German speaking Kindernothilfe employee Christian Jung is available for telephone interviews from Dhaka since Thursday, the 9th of August.

(Duisburg/ Nairobi, August 2007) The CRADLE, partner organization of Kindernothilfe, together with Childline, Coalition of Young Kenyan Voters, Centre for Education and Rights Awareness (CREAW), FEMNET, Kenya Aids NGOs Consortium (KANCO), Kituo cha Sheria (Legal Aid Centre), the organizations that comprise the Individual Complaints Procedure Working Group, organized a National Conference on the Draft Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Right of the Child with an Individual Complaints Procedure.

(Duisburg, June 2007) At the background of the present debate on the continuation of the German engagement in Afghanistan, Kindernothilfe promotes continuosness of German development aid in Afghanistan. „The situation of infants and children is catclysmic and especially young mothers still need our backing and our consultation", said Dietmar Roller, director for foreign affairs of the organization. According to current numbers published by the UN 257 of 1000 children die before they are five years old and 165 of 1000 infants die before their first birthdays. This means Afghanistan ist he country with the highest rate of infant mortality in the world.

The Millennium Development Goal „Achieve universial primary education“ is in danger. Throughout the world 80 million girls and boys still do not got to school, because the rich industrial states do not keep their promises to the developing countries. Every year about 16 million dollars are missing to put to school in reality every child required to attend school. The Global Campaign for Education marked the efforts of the Federal Government of Germany just with a D.

(Duisburg, May 11th 2007) Kindernothilfe extended the range of its work in 2006. Today 302.859 children in 27 countries worldwide benefit from the help from Duisburg. In 2006 the registered charitable organization Kindernothilfe e.V. had an income to the amount of 52,5 million (2005: 69,4) euros. Decline is due to the exceptional willingness to donate for Tsunami-projects in 2005. Average annual income after being adjusted by those funds used for emergency aid are to the amount of about 600.000 Euro (1,2 per cent) higher than income of the previous year.
