Global Campaign Against Poverty & Inequality: STAND UP and TAKE ACTION 2008

Photo: CCRD CCRD together with 14 organizations working in the districts of Thiruvallur, Kancheepuram and Chennai organized a HUMAN CHAIN at Chennai, Tamil Nadu - INDIA on 18th October 2008 between 10.30 am and 12.30 am as part of the STAND UP and TAKE ACTION - 2008 (Global Call to Action Against Poverty (GCAP) and to also coincide with the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty on October 17.
More than eight hundred women, children and youth stood in a Human Chain, in the busy Foreshore Estate Bus Terminus Square of Chennai City holding placards and raising slogans calling the attention of World leaders to take action to eradicate Poverty and
Hunger and to ensure concerted Governmental interventions for the effective implementation of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG's). The focus was on feminization of poverty and increasing vulnerability of children belonging to the marginalized communities.
At the national-level the following demands were put forth for eradication of poverty and ending hunger.
- Ensure Increased State allocation for education and health
- Do not reduce or stop subsidies for agriculture
- Provide Employment for rural labour throughout the year with living wages through effective implementation of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA)
- Stop unregulated privatization and promote public sector enterprises
- End setting up of Special Economic Zone (SEZ)
- Provide Social Security to unorganized labour
- Towards raising mass awareness of this Millennium Campaign, educational hand bills were distributed. The print and electronic media were invited to cover the event.
