(Duisburg/ Dhaka, 10.8.2007) Kindernothilfe increases emergency aid for the victims of the flood in South Asia to 100,00 euro. What is most important is primary medical aid for children and families in Bangladesh. The emergency aid reaches 40,000 persons, among them 24,000 children in four regions of the country and in Dhaka. German speaking Kindernothilfe employee Christian Jung is available for telephone interviews from Dhaka since Thursday, the 9th of August.
„Our partners together with doctors and medical staff are tirelessly in action to protect children from loosing mineral nutrients by diarrhea, which is a threat to their lives." Erhard Stueckrath, project-coordinator of Kindernothilfe, explains. „The teams distribute tablets to disinfect drinking water and ORS (oral rehydration solution). Furthermore they provide 1,000 mini water filters which look like oversized straws."Children can wear these „Life-Straws" with neck ribbons. This appliance allows them to unconcernedly drink even the dirtiest water, if necessary, for several weeks.
The victims of the flood receive food items like rice, lentils, oil and salt. In addition, the teams distribute baby food for infants. Furthermore, the helpers rescue 20.000 endangered refugees from inundated territories with boats and bring them to one of 34 flood shelters.
