German Engagement in Afghanistan is Essential

(Duisburg, June 2007) At the background of the present debate on the continuation of the German engagement in Afghanistan, Kindernothilfe promotes continuosness of German development aid in Afghanistan. „The situation of infants and children is catclysmic and especially young mothers still need our backing and our consultation", said Dietmar Roller, director for foreign affairs of the organization. According to current numbers published by the UN 257 of 1000 children die before they are five years old and 165 of 1000 infants die before their first birthdays. This means Afghanistan ist he country with the highest rate of infant mortality in the world.

Kindernothilfe faces these horrible facts e.g. by supporting two hospitals in Kabul and by establishing self-help groups for women all over the country. By expert advice and microcredits young women and mothers learn to obtain their own incomes. Furthermore they improve the care and nutrition of their infants and children. Kindenothilfe does not delegate German specialists, but cooperates with local colleagues and international organizations.

All over the country the organization from Duisburg supports by now eight projects with an annual budget of 310.000 euros on the whole. Among these there are programs promoting nutrition and health in the Wakhan Corridor and in Jalalabad, programs for disabled children in the paghman-province and in Jalalabad and a program promoting HIV education in Kabul.
